Benefits of Participating in Groups, Workshops, and Retreats
Support: Participants realize they are not alone, which reduces stigma and loneliness and fosters social connection.- Shared Experience and Insight: Hearing others’ perspectives allows members to gain new insights into their own lives and behaviors.
- Safe Space to Try New Skills: Groups function as a mini-society, allowing members to practice new skills and coping strategies in a supportive environment.
- Guidance and Feedback: Trained therapists provide experiential activities and interactions, providing immediate, constructive feedback and emotional support.
- Accountability: Group members motivate one another to stay on track with treatment goals and expand their support network.
- Cost: Groups and Workshops are often more affordable than individual sessions while being equally effective for many conditions. However, many group facilitators do not accept insurance for groups. Retreats, while ranging in cost, offer an immersive experience away from everyday distractions, allowing you to truly focus on healing.
Groups, Workshops & Retreat Focus
The focus may be psychoeducational (teaching specific, skills-based techniques for stress or emotional regulation), support-focused (dealing with specific life challenges like grief or cancer), or interpersonal processing-oriented. Groups may be open (anyone can join at any time) or closed (once registration is complete, that group does not add new members for the specified duration).
What’s the Difference?
- Groups usually meet weekly, biweekly, or once a month and can last 1-2 hours. Groups usually involve voluntary interaction. Since groups are usually smaller, participants have often reported feeling safer to be vulnerable and to grow.
- Workshops are usually half to full-day events that include more instruction and experiential group activities with less sharing of personal experiences.
- Retreats offer the best of both worlds, allowing participants to escape from the outside world, join an intimate and supportive group of like-minded people, and receive educational instruction, guidance, and support.
